Sunshine Room - Big Question - Term 2.1 - What do I know about winter? End of Term Summary 25/26

This half term in our two-year-old nursery classroom, the children explored our big question: “What do I know about winter?”

The children enjoyed a range of exciting, hands-on activities that helped them discover what winter is like. One of our favourite experiences was sensory exploration with ice. Frozen animals were trapped in blocks of ice and the children observed carefully as the ice slowly melted and turned into water. They touched the ice to feel how cold it was and talked about the changes they could see.

During our Hello Group sessions, we discussed how we keep warm in winter. The children shared ideas about wearing hats, scarves, coats and gloves to stay warm when the weather is cold. We also learned about animals in winter, talking about animals that hibernate and animals that live in very cold, snowy places, such as polar bears, wolves and arctic foxes.

Our learning continued outdoors during Forest School, where we explored the wet winter weather. The children had lots of fun splashing in muddy puddles and noticing how the forest looks and feels different in winter.

To finish our topic, the children created beautiful winter artwork. They painted icy pictures using foil and a mixture of blue and white paints, experimenting with colour and texture to create frosty winter scenes.

It has been a wonderful half term full of curiosity, exploration and creativity as the children discovered the sights, sounds and sensations of winter.
