Celebrating Sukkot

Class: Rainbow Room Year: 2022 - 2023

Sukkot is a Jewish festival for harvest. Thanks is given during this time for shelter and food and celebrates the gatehring of the harvest.

To celebrate the Jewish festival of Sukkot, the Children in Rainbow Room made some vegetable soup. They explored carrots, leeks, potatoes and onions using all their senses before chopping them up and mixing them in a pan of water. The ingredients were then cooked and blended to make a yummy soup which the chidlren were offered at snack time.

As part of this celebration, the children also helped to make some special Challah bread; this is a type of sweet bread that is rolled into 3 pieces and braided together. After baking, the bread was glazed in honey and pumpkin seeds were sprinkled over the top.

During the festival, families build a temporary dwelling called a sukkah in which they eat special celebratory food and even sleep in there. The Challah bread was taken to the forest and eaten at snack time by the children.
