2022/23 Term 1.2 Why are there so many leaves on the ground? End of Term

Our Big Question this half term has been 'Why are there so many leaves on the ground?'

We started by asking the children the big question and writing down their ideas about why there are so many leaves on the ground at the moment.

We then spent time in family group, forest school and free play investigating leaves, finding l eaves, making leaf prints and leaf rubnings. In Forest school we did an autumn hunt looking around for different colour leaves, birds, pine cones and alder cones, also we made leaf pictures and leaf kebabs.

We use the book Autumn by emily Dufresne to find out more about the season, to think about festivals we celebrate in autumn, the kind of clothes we might wear and what the weather could be like.

We also learnt the Makaton signs for Autumn, tree, leaf, yellow, red and orange.

We read the stories Squirrel's Autumn Search, Bear Snores on and Herbie's Big Adventure to extend our knowledge about autumn and made hedgehog bread, did leaf clay prints and made clay hedgehogs.

The children then shared what they now know and added more information to their big question mind map.

They can now confidently talk about the leaves falling off the tree becuase it is autumn and talk about festivals, the weather and autumn colours.
