This term, the children explored the season of autumn through the question “Why are there so many leaves on the ground?” They developed new vocabulary, learned Makaton signs, and deepened their understanding through stories and information books.
The children took part in autumn walks, collecting natural objects and using mark-making to represent what they found. They investigated leaves closely, explored autumn colours, created leaf rubbings and experimented with colour mixing. These activities supported their observation skills and creativity.
They learned about woodland animals and hibernation, and developed practical skills by cooking autumn vegetable soup and making hedgehog bread rolls. Stories such as Herbie’s Big Adventure and Squirrel’s Autumn Search helped them apply and recall new knowledge.
Overall, the children strengthened their communication, early literacy, creativity, understanding of the natural world and independence through rich, hands-on experiences linked to the autumn season.
