Garden Room - Big Question - Term 3.1 - Where do plants and flowers come from? 25/26 - End of Term Summary
This half term, our Big Question has been: “Where do plants and flowers come from?”
We began by asking the children to share their ideas and created mind maps to record what they already knew.
We then explored flowers from the garden, along with pictures, to learn about the different parts of a plant. The children discovered that roots help plants absorb water and nutrients from the soil while keeping them firmly in place. They learned about seeds and bulbs, which are planted in the soil and grow into plants; stems, which grow upwards towards the sky; leaves, which grow from the stem and reach out towards the sunshine; and flowers, which grow at the top of the plant and can have many colourful petals.
The children drew their own pictures to label the different parts of a plant. We also explored a variety of fruits and looked for their seeds. The children noticed that most seeds are found inside fruits, while some are on the outside.
Each child planted a sunflower to take home and care for. Some sunflowers have grown very tall, while others are still growing steadily. The children have enjoyed sharing how they have cared for them by placing them in sunlight and watering them regularly.
We have also been caring for our Garden Room vegetable patches by removing weeds and planting out the seedlings we started before Easter. The children have helped look after them by watering them carefully.
During Forest School, the children made seed bombs and placed them in a patch of soil to grow. We also talked about how some seeds can be eaten and enjoyed cooking seeded bread over the fire.
At the end of the half term, we revisited our original mind maps to reflect on how much the children had learned about our Big Question: “Where do plants and flowers come from?”
The children can now talk about planting seeds and explain what plants need in order to grow. They can identify the different parts of a plant and give simple explanations of the roles of roots and stems. They have also developed a stronger understanding of how to care for plants and flowers and have shown great enthusiasm for helping to water and care for our growing vegetables.
