SS: Term 3.1 Where do plants and flowers come from?

Our big question this term is 'Where do plants and flowers come from?'

The children in sunshine room will explore our big question through non fiction books at group time and during continuous provision. We will also be developing our love of reading, using our imagination and be creative as we learn more about growth by sharing our focus stories 'Jack and the beanstalk' and 'Jaspers beanstalk.' and taking part in lots of related activities

As part of our home learning experience the children will plant a sunflower seed within class and take it home to look after.  We hope our families will enjoy observing and talking about the changes they see as the seed grows into a sunflower.  Children's communication and vocabulary will develop as they learn new words about plants and growth and show an interest in the natural world.

During the sessions the children will have opportunities to explore different friut and vegetables that contain seeds and will enjoy tasting these at snack time.

Our nursery potato challenge will continue this term as the children will water and look after our potato buckets within our nursery garden.  We will be observing and talking about how much they have grown.  At the end of our challenge the children will harvest their potatoes and we will use them in our cookery sessions. There will be lots of opportunity to develop our understanding of mathematical concepts as we compare size, shape and weight of the potatoes.
