Sunshine Room- Big Question - Term 1.2 - Why are there so many leaves on the ground? - End of Term Summary 25/26
This term, the children explored the season of autumn through our Big Question, “Why are there so many leaves on the ground?” Throughout the topic, they developed new vocabulary, learned key Makaton signs, and deepened their understanding through a range of stories and information books.
The children enjoyed autumn walks where they collected natural objects and used mark-making to represent their discoveries. They investigated leaves closely, explored the rich colours of autumn, created detailed leaf rubbings, and experimented with colour mixing, all of which supported their observation skills and creativity.
Learning extended to woodland animals and hibernation, helping the children develop their understanding of the natural world. They also built practical life skills through cooking activities, including making autumn vegetable soup. Stories such as Herbie’s Big Adventure and Squirrel’s Autumn Search supported the children in applying and recalling new knowledge.
Overall, the children made excellent progress across communication and language, early literacy, creativity, independence, and their understanding of the world through a wide range of meaningful, hands-on autumn experiences
