Clay Faces with Debs - October 2025
Lesson: EYFS
Class: Garden Room Year: 2025 - 2026
Before half-term we had our first visit from Debs the potter!
The children had the opportunity to make their faces out of a new material -clay.
First we thought about our faces and pointed out all of our features. We used oval templates and special knives to cut out the shape for our face and then we rolled little pieces of clay to make our eyes, nose and mouth before using a pencil to make marks for our hair.
Debs has taken them back to the studio to fire them. We can’t wait to see how they turn out!
The children learnt new clay skills, such as cutting , rolling and mark-making too!
Clay work has many benefits for the children at nursery, including fine motor development; sensory exploration opportunities; fostering creativity and imagination in the children; problem solving skills and developing communication and language skills too.
providing clay experiences for our children is not just about making art; it's a holistic learning experience that supports their physical, cognitive, creative, and emotional growth in a fun and engaging way.
