How do we know it is Spring?

Lesson: EYFS

Class: Garden Room Year: 2020 - 2021

This term we have been thinking about our big question 'How do we know it is spring?'

The children offered fabulous suggestions about, flowers, animals and eggs. Over the term we have explored the children’s ideas through directed activities and through continuous provision.

The children have been part of a 'signs of spring' walk in our forest. We found many signs of spring; blossom on the trees, daffodils, bluebells and snowdrops growing from the ground.

We have read information books to help us to learn about spring and have noticed that the sun has been shining more and it is getting a little warmer. Although we have noticed lots of rain too! We found out that the flowers need lots of sunshine and rain to grow.

We have been busy in our nursery garden, planting seeds. We have planted potato seeds, peas and peppers. In nursery we have been growing cress, this allowed the children to watch and talk about the process of seed to plant in a very short time, as cress grown very quickly.

We have also had the amazing opportunity to watch and care for some eggs, we had lots of discussion around what could be inside the eggs and learnt about animals that hatch from eggs and animals that don’t. It didn’t take long, just a few days waiting and we found out our eggs had ducklings inside them. The children have cared for and looked after 5 beautiful little ducklings.
