Learning about Diwali- Autumn - 2023/24

Lesson: EYFS

Class: Garden Room Year: 2023 - 2024

This week the children have been learning about the festival of Diwali. This year Diwali falls on 12th November 2023.

Diwali is a Festival of Lights, celebrated by millions of people across the world. Diwali is a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness, and for some also coincides with harvest and new year celebrations.

We learnt that on Diwali people clean their houses then decorate with Rangoli patterns and eat special food with their families.

The children have created their own rangoli insired patterns, made and cooked their own simosas and create diva lamps. To make the samosas the children chopped up the cooked potatoes and mixed them with the rest of the ingredients. We added a sprinkle of garam masala and garlic powder and then mixed up our filling before putting it on the samosa pastry and folding it up. We cooked them in the oven and also had some other special food to try - raita, mango chutney, popadoms and naan bread.

We also have had a special visit from our friend Purvi. Purvi celebrates Diwali and she joined us to share her experiences. The children dressed up in tradional clothing, danced to traditional music and heard the story of Rama and Sita and the Demon King retold by Purvi.

Please see below a retelling of the story the children now know and love.
