Searching for the Gruffalo - December 2023

Lesson: Literacy

Class: Garden Room Forest School Year: 2023 - 2024

This week during our forest school sessions the children could hear footsteps and growling coming from in the Forest!

We all went in together to go and investigate what it was. Soon we found the mouse from Gruffalo story, so we wondered if the footsteps and growling had been the Gruffalo.

We stayed together and searched through the Forest. We came to an animal with orange eyes. “It’s the Gruffalo” I said but no it was a frog. We carried on and found the fox. We remembered that he lived in an underground house but that he needed to hide because the Gruffalo liked roasted fox. We carried on and found lots of other animals we looked closely at them some had claws, and tusks, some had knobbly knees and terrible teeth, but none were the Gruffalo. We also found the snake, hiding because he didn’t want to be scrambled snake and the owl flew away because he didn’t want to be owl ice cream.

We thought we were safe until we saw another creature. We looked closely at it - orange eyes, black tongue, purple prickles, terrible teeth and terrible tusks and terrible claws, knobbly knees and turned out toes and a poisonous wart on his nose “Oh help, oh no, it’s a Gruffalo!”

We ran back past the other animals warning them the Gruffalo was coming so they didn’t get eaten.
Finally we got back to the mouse and he found a nut and the nut was good!

We had lots of fun this week searching for the Gruffalo. The children could remember lots of details about the Gruffalo which helped us to find him.
