The very hungry caterpillar

Lesson: Understanding the World

Class: Sunshine Room Year: 2021 - 2022

This term the very hungry caterpillars came to visit us. They arrived in a little pot full of food for the hungry caterpillars to eat and we looked at them moving around and creating webs. The children were curious and asked "why is there a spiders web in there?" so we did some very busy research and found out that caterpillars create a web to protect themselves from predators. We looked at the each day to see how much they had grown and each day the caterpillars got bigger and bigger until they evenutally built a house around themselves called a cocoon. The children read all about The Very Hungry Caterpillar and how after he had eaten lots of food he grew bigger and bigger and then he built a house around himself and stayed inside for two weeks until he pushed his way out and became a big BEAUTIFUL butterfly.
